BE Lab Manual Experiment 9

Experiment 9

Aim: - To study IC 74150 as a 16:1 Multiplexer and verify its truth table

Apparatus: - 16:1 Multiplexer kit, patch chords, Digital multimeter.

Theory:-A multiplexer is a circuit with many inputs but only one output I.e.  Multiplex means many into one. By applying control signals, we can select any input to the output figure (1) illustrates the general idea. The circuit has ‘n’ input signals & only one output signal.

IC 74150 is a 16:1 TTL multiplexer with the pin diagram shown in figure (2)

This is a 24 Pin IC. It has 16 data input D0D15, Four controls (select) A3, A2, A1, A0, input signal and one output which is a compliment of selected data, with pins diagram shown in figure (2). The Pin 9 is Active Low Enable/Strobe input. A low Enable/ strobes enable the multiplexer. But high strobe disables & output becomes high. If strobe / enable is low, then output Y equals the complement of the Data input. Depending upon the control signal A3, A2, A1, A0, Data input D0D15 is transmitted at the output which is a compliment of this data as shown in the truth table

Truth table:

Figure (3) Truth table

Procedure:

  1. Study the circuit diagram provided on the front panel of the kit.

  2. Switch ON the power supply.

  3. Check DC voltage +V at pin 24 of IC using Digital Multimeter.

  4. Note logic 1 & logic 0 Voltage level of logic inputs using Digital multimeter.

  5. Connect all data inputs input D0D15 to logic inputs switches using patch chords.

  6. Change the control input signals A3, A2, A1, A0 as per the truth table. Observe & Note

the compliment output of corresponding data input.

         e.g.  If A3, A2, A1, A0 = 0000, then D0 is selected at the output.

       So if D0 = 1, then output Y = 0

                D0 = 1, then output Y = 1

  1. Repeat step (6) for different positions of D0D15 & A3, A2, A1, and A0 as per

      truth table.

Conclusion: - IC 74150, 16:1Mux which connect 16 inputs to one output. Depending on the data of control signals A3, A2, A1, A0. The output of IC is the complement of selected data input. It is also called a data selector.
